The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka

An intriguing portrayal of isolation and estrangement. Humans yearn to be understood and experience intense difficulty when we’re unable to communicate, particularly to those closest to us.

Sometimes we attempt proactive communication and almost succeed. We simplify the message, if we even know what it is, and we vocalise the challenge, if we can find the words. But on tricky subjects, the ones that truly matter, the balance feels unfairly tilted towards negative outcomes. So close to clarity, but yet, so far. When the communication fails, things fall apart. Perhaps it’s better to retreat?

Attempts by others to cross the divide are deeply appreciated. But it’s difficult to help people who struggle to help themselves. The motivation to build a bridge wears thin, if the efforts aren’t recognised. Eventually attention turns towards more tangible and rewarding exploits.
